On Sunday our family threw a carnival birthday party for 3 of the littles in our lives. It was 80* degrees outside here in Massachusetts. We were not really prepared for the heat. We did plan for it a bit though, we kept the pool open! It was a fantastic day for the children and the adults alike. The theme was County Fair/Carnival. We had cotton candy, sno-cones, popcorn, games, and fair-like food. It was simple and fun. I do not think a single person, young or old could have left feeling anything but happy. And that is what it is all about. Celebrating your children and your family. This happened to be about birthdays, but we think our family time should always be celebratory, and we strive to make our time together joyful as often as that is possible.
Children who feel celebrated thrive and develop confidences that other children do not have. They are resilient because when they make efforts and achieve even the smallest things they are recognized. They feel appreciated. Their hard work, or their bad day, or happiness, is noticed. They aren't there to be seen and not heard. They are there because they are loved. Giving genuine, specific praise for huge milestones, and small victories creates for children (and adults alike, I say) a sense of security and belonging. Both of those things are so important for a child's healthy development. Children's efforts should be acknowledged and celebrated, not just the successes.
So, on Sunday, we celebrated, and laughed, and hugged, and shed a few "they will never be this age again" tears. We shared the experience of the baby farm animals, the pony rides, the carnival games, the face painting and all the things. It was wonderful and simple, and when you do that for 3 children at once, not really expensive. I will post another piece about how we created the carnival, so you can do it, too! They will only be little for a short while. Do not let is pass you by. Leave the dishes in the sink, a load or two of laundry can wait. Spend time celebrating the ones you love, young or old. Celebrate. Hope to see you soon!
